Grape growing in Mildura

Did you know Australia grows more than 220k tonnes of table grapes?

And energy savings are ripe for the picking.

Mildura is home to the lion’s share of Australia’s table grape industry and as the year comes to a close, growers are just starting to ramp up.

Using most of their energy between September and April, these hard workers are watering, picking and cooling grapes so those juicy morsels make it to your table in the best shape.

Speaking of shape. The load shape of a table grape grower can be quite out of the ordinary. This can push up both network and energy rates and mean simple solar would go unused across the year.

When Birdwood’s partner, Solarcell introduced us - it was a no brainer. Our experts designed a solar and battery system that links into cool rooms, chillers and pumps. The smarthub was installed ready for the birdwood bot to do what it does best - optimise.

But that’s not all. There’s plenty of low hanging fruit left.

A feasibility study investigated the business case for flexibility across the different equipment on the site through birdwood’s phasing model. Looking at the site from the bottom up to find an economic pathway to net zero.

  • Baseline: Status quo

  • Phase 1: Introducing birdwood through Small solar and smarthub

  • Phase 2: Adding to the system with a battery

  • Phase 3: Working with the team on when equipment to get a better average energy rate

  • Phase 4: Looking at expanding the Smart Power Station

  • Phase 5: Understanding the business case to get to net zero

Understanding that the priority is always the quality of grapes hitting your fruitbowl, these numbers give the business the facts and tools to make decisions.
