Powering a Greener Future: How Solar Energy is Driving Sustainability in Local Government

February 15, 2025

Introduction

Blacktown City Council, one of the largest local government areas in New South Wales, is committed to achieving net-zero emissions and enhancing community resilience. As part of its Blacktown 2041 Community Strategic Plan, the council has implemented a range of initiatives to reduce emissions, improve sustainability, and foster a greener future.

Challenge: Reducing Emissions and Energy Costs Across Multiple Sites

As a rapidly growing urban area, Blacktown faced the challenge of high energy consumption across its council-owned facilities. The council sought a cost-effective and sustainable solution to cut emissions while reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Solution: Deployment of Solar Energy Across 16 Sites

To meet its sustainability goals, Birdwood Business Energy has supported the installation of more than 690 kW of solar panels across 16 council facilities for Blacktown City Council under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. This large-scale solar initiative was designed to generate clean energy on-site, significantly reducing the council’s carbon footprint and operational costs.

Results: A More Sustainable and Resilient City

The solar project has delivered tangible environmental and economic benefits, aligning with Blacktown's vision of becoming a net-zero emissions city:

  • Carbon Reduction: The solar installations offset more than 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, equivalent to removing 200 cars from the road annually

  • Energy Cost Savings: By generating renewable energy on-site, the council has reduced its reliance on grid electricity, resulting in substantial cost savings.

  • Resilience & Leadership: The initiative reinforces Blacktown’s leadership in sustainability, setting a strong example for other councils and businesses in the region.

By embracing solar power, Blacktown City Council is demonstrating its commitment to a cleaner, more resilient future while actively working towards its Blacktown 2041 sustainability targets.
